Conversations | 12. Kirste Oates – Back to basics strategy

Kirste Oates is looking at the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic from different angles.

As a mum to three daughters, she shares the concern of most West Australians about the need to protect her family. And as a breakfast announcer at Perth radio station 98.5 Sonshine FM, she is conscious of the need to spread positive stories to keep people’s spirits high as they face some difficult times.

As part of Creating Communities’ Stronger Together series of video conversations to help people navigate through these testing times, Kirste shares some of the creative approaches her family is employing to stay close as she juggles work and home life and her teenagers do their schooling at home.

She advocates a “back to basics” strategy, and sees opportunities for a stronger community if we all use the time away from our regular activities to reach out and make sure our neighbours are doing OK.

Kirste Oates is a breakfast announcer at 98.5 Sonshine FM and the mother of three daughters.

This interview is part of Creating Communities’ series of video conversations with prominent Australians offering insights and wisdom on coping with the challenges this pandemic presents for all of us. It is a key part of our “Stronger Together” approach to the COVID-19 crisis as we work to bring people and communities together to help each other through this testing time.
