Conversations | 10. Justin Langer – Lessons to learn from crisis

In a time of uncertainty, Justin Langer has some simple, clear advice for people who are struggling with fear and anxiety surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic – just look after what you can look after.

In an interview for Creating Communities’ Stronger Together series of video conversations, the Australian Test cricket coach says that constantly worrying about what could happen won’t help, and just takes away from the potential of what we can gain from this moment. As with any crisis, there are many lessons to learn and opportunities to be gained.

Justin tells us we can be using this time of isolation to focus on preparing as best we can for whatever comes. That includes looking after ourselves, our family and our home, as well as showing compassion for those around us.

It is a reminder not to take anything for granted, he says.

On a personal note, he is finding consolation in the shutdown of international cricket because it gives him an extended period at home with his family, something he hasn’t been able to enjoy for almost 30 years.

Justin Langer is the Australian Test cricket coach and a board member of the West Coast Eagles AFL club. His is married with four daughters.

This interview is part of Creating Communities’ series of video conversations with prominent Australians offering insights and wisdom on coping with the challenges this pandemic presents for all of us. It is a key part of our “Stronger Together” approach to the COVID-19 crisis as we work to bring people and communities together to help each other through this testing time.
