Reviving joint action to build social value
Creating Communities teamed with BHP in Port Hedland to revive the Hedland Collective, a community development venture by local organisations and individuals that was in need of a clearer purpose and sharper focus. The Collective was set up in 2017 to drive community development, but after two years of operation, interest and excitement had diminished as the impact was not meeting initial hopes. We helped refresh the steering committee through a call for more members, and worked to refine the vision of the Collective and develop a communications strategy. The Collective is now getting results as it narrows its focus to a few key projects, including school-based traineeships and greater access to child care.
This project is ongoing as rebuilding trust and developing a sustainable model of collaboration takes time. However, this process has allowed for community members, stakeholders and the steering committee to have regular input ensuring that the strategic direction of the Collective is relevant to the local context.
- 52 students have received an offer to complete a school-based traineeship in 2020, exceeding the school’s aims.
- By February 2020 there will be an additional 80 child care places in Hedland.
