We have started digging into the new Census Data released for 2016 – here’s what we’ve found.
As our population continues to grow and our society continues to become more diverse, it’s more important than ever to have a deep understanding of the communities in which we operate. Understanding the people that make up our streets, towns and cities means that we can better respond to their needs and aspirations, and achieve greater outcomes in the long run. Below is a brief snapshot of just some of the ways our Perth metropolitan regions have evolved over the last five years.
While a proportional decrease in living in separate houses was seen across the metropolitan areas, Perth Inner was the only area to also experience a proportional increase in apartment and flat living, rising from 30.7% in 2011 to 32.9% in 2016.
Reflecting an overall trend in our ageing population, people aged within the 65 – 69 year age bracket in the North West increased from 17,437 (3.6% of the population) in 2011, to 23,793 (4.4% of the population) in 2016.
As seen in each of the metropolitan areas in 2016, less people own their homes outright and more people own a home with a mortgage when compared with 2011 figures. In the North East, the proportion of outright ownership decreased from 30.3% in 2011 to 28.6% in 2016, while ownership with a mortgage rose from 40.6% in 2011 to 42.9% 2016.
Only speaking English at home dropped in the South West from 81.5% in 2011 to 77.5% in 2016, suggesting a more diverse community. Mandarin is now the most common language other than English spoken at home, experiencing a 59% increase in the number of speakers from 2011.
In family composition, the proportion of couple families with children increased from 44.5% in 2011 to 46.5% in 2016, a total increase of 16%.
