Hitting the high notes with a 6-star Green Star – Communities rating

• Projects

Subi East was recently recognised as a world leader in sustainable community development, after receiving a 6-Star Green Star – Communities rating through the Green Building Council of Australia.

Creating Communities is proud to have worked with DevelopmentWA and consultants Hames Sharley and UDLA in leading the extensive community engagement process which informed the Subi East masterplan and contributing to the submission for the 6 Green Start Communities rating.

Subi East is one of the most significant urban redevelopment projects being undertaken in Western Australia and will see the rejuvenation of 35 hectares of inner-city land to create a new, vibrant north-eastern gateway to Subiaco on the sites that previously housed Subiaco Oval and Princess Margaret Hospital.

The community engagement process therefore needed to be thorough and comprehensive, and included focus groups with key stakeholders and industry representatives; community reference group workshops; key stakeholder podcasts and vox pops; online community surveys and polls; interviews with key stake holders and community groups; development of the Stories of Subi website and communications collateral.

To achieve a Green Star – Communities rating, Green Building Council Australia assesses the planning, design, and construction of large-scale development projects at a precinct, neighbourhood and/or community scale. It provides a rigorous and holistic rating across five impact categories – governance, liveability, economic prosperity, environment and innovation.

Creating Communities director Andrew Watt said the community engagement helped identify key heritage and environmental features for the project.

Sustainability was a key aspiration of the community that was identified through the extensive engagement and planning process – so it is pleasing to see that Subi East has achieved the highest possible Green Star rating.

Western Australia’s planning minister Rita Saffioti said Subi East is the most significant redevelopment project of its type in modern times.

“Right from the start we wanted to ensure good quality design and sustainability,” she said.

“Achieving a Green Star certification is no easy feat – to receive a maximum 6-Star Green Star – Communities accreditation is something of which we can all be enormously proud of.”
