Satellite technology in remote communities

The Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy, developed by the WA Government in 2019 advocates that “Aboriginal people, families and communities should be empowered to live good lives and choose their own futures from a secure foundation.” One of the key principles of the Strategy is that services to Aboriginal people are accessible so that “they are not disadvantaged by geographic location, cultural and language background or access to technology.” Creating Communities has been incredibly proud to be involved in a project that is helping empower First Nations peoples with the installation of telehealth and digital services to First Nations peoples living in remote Western Desert communities.

Projects
Kujunkarrinjanka – Coming Together

For the last three years, we have been incredibly privileged and honoured to work alongside Martu and Nyiyaparli people and the Newman community to co-design the Cultural Compact. The compact is an invitation to all people, communities, organisations and government to walk forward in a new way acknowledging Nyiyaparli and Martu land, culture, language and law.

Projects
FIFO life and wellbeing

Creating Communities has been quietly building what we believe to be the world’s largest repository on Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) workers’ quality of life. Our data is supporting improved outcomes for workers in leading resources companies in Western Australia.

Projects
Digital platforms: Powering the way we engage and connect communities

As we learn to live with COVID 19, digital technology continues to play an increasingly important role in our lives. This year we have developed a number of digital platforms and websites across our projects, which serve to engage, inform and connect communities.

Projects
The importance of community engagement in planning and design

Quality, comprehensive community engagement is at the heart of what we do at Creating Communities. We believe it is fundamental that all projects and developments take into account the needs and aspirations of all parts of the community.

Projects
Collaboration networks driving positive change

For 30 years we have helped build healthy communities, where people feel safe, valued and cared for. We know through our extensive experience, that the key to enriching the wellbeing of communities can only happen by forming effective partnerships with individuals, stakeholders and organisations.

Projects
Revitalising neighbourhoods builds stronger communities

Last year, as part of our Newman Futures project, we facilitated a series of workshops to co-design the revitalisation of East Newman. Stakeholders and community members came together to share their ideas on what East Newman could look like in the future, what would make it feel like home and how it can better reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community. One of the needs identified from this community engagement process was for a more connected and actively engaged community in East Newman. And so, in April this year, in partnership with local businesses, stakeholders and services providers, we launched the East Newman Activation program.

Projects
Measuring social impact in the Pilbara

Helping organisations achieve positive social impact is a key element of all Creating Communities’ community development work. In 2021, we continued to provide strategic backbone support for two ongoing Collective Impact projects in the Pilbara region of WA – one in Newman and one in Hedland.

Projects
Harnessing the power of community

We know that COVID-19 will continue to impact on our lives, and so our focus this year has been to identify opportunities with stakeholders and community members that will lead to strong, local connections.

Projects
Celebrating the School Based Traineeships

There are some things that can only happen when we come together. A key initiative that the Hedland Collective supports is the School Based Traineeship program. A program that speaks directly to the Collective’s mission of boosting opportunities for all people and propelling enterprise.

Projects
A Celebration of Culture

At Creating Communities, we’re all about working with others to build strong, connected and resilient communities.

Projects
Bibra Lake Wetlands – A Place of Connection and Conservation

The Beeliar Wetlands hold a special place in the hearts of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. Beeliar Nyungar means ‘river people’, and the area has long provided a variety of food, medicine, building materials and is as spiritually significant to Aboriginal people as King’s Park.
