Creating Communities was commissioned by the Shire of Wiluna as part of a project funded by the Department of Local Government and Regional Development to conduct the Wiluna Community Building project. The Shire of Wiluna covers and area of 184,000 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 1700, 21% of whom identify as Aboriginal. The project focused on assessing and proposing an appropriate level of social infrastructure provision, strategies to enhance cultural identity, engagement with the community, facilitation of school to work pathways and creation of local business opportunities. Over 100 meetings, workshops and community activities were held and an Action Research Project, using art, community engagement and school programs was implemented.
The resulting Wiluna Community Building Framework (WCBF) “Living Strong on the Edge of the Desert” aimed to present an achievable strategy for future socioeconomic development in the Wiluna Local Government Area. The documentation provided the strategic framework for delivery of community initiatives and also provided a governance structure for its delivery.
