The Village at Wellard Joint Venture [Department of Housing and Works and Peet Limited].

Opportunity

The Village at Wellard is a 2,700 lot, mixed-use subdivision being developed by joint venture partners in the Town of Kwinana. The development will be the first greenfields transit-oriented village in Western Australia. The challenge is to position the community as a place of aspiration and entrepreneurship with a strong sense of community.

Our Role

Creating Communities has prepared a Community and Economic Development Strategy for the Estate to the year 2014. A key role is to implement benchmark community development practices. As the appointed community consultants, Creating Communities play an integral role in issues management, community relations, buyer communication, community formation, economic development, employment generation, facility planning, community engagement, stakeholder management and main street and civic space activation.

Achievements

  • The establishment of a community sponsorship program to support volunteer community groups in improving services in the Kwinana community;

  • A community Infrastructure Provision Strategy;

  • Early planning and provision of a Mainstreet Community Centre;

  • Construction of a multi-purpose sports pavilion to be jointly funded and built by the Anglican Schools Commission, Wellard Joint Venture and the Town of Kwinana;

  • A GreenCorp project with the Town of Kwinana to restore and rehabilitate the wetlands by a group of 10 youth aged 17-20 years. Project partner Town of Kwinana;

  • Established a Community Environmental Reference Group to promote environmental stewardship by the community;

  • Brokered an agreement between the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC) and Wellard Joint Venture to undertake research into the effects of transit-oriented development on travel behaviours;

  • Organised buyer information nights and welcome events for new residents; and

  • Prepared a Public and Community Arts Strategy with consultant Epcad.
