The Shed at Brighton Project

The Satterley Property Group through the Brighton Joint Venture

The lack of available training opportunities in the building trades for young people in the northern suburbs of Perth provided a challenge, with students having to travel a great distance to get to access the closest available training at Balga TAFE.

The Shed at Brighton is an innovative initiative that responds to identified needs for local skills training programs for the building and construction industry, with the added element of an employment placement service to link students with potential employers in the region.

Creating Communities has been engaged by the Satterley Property Group to manage the development of the Shed Project and has been a driving force in conceptualisation and management of the project.

In performing this role, Creating Communities has led the project steering group, comprising representatives of key stakeholders and has worked with the Satterley Property Group and stakeholders in planning The Shed project.

These stakeholders include the Brighton Estate Joint Venture (Satterley Property Group), TAFE, the City of Wanneroo, Clarkson Community High School, a representative of local building and construction contractors, a representative of non-government training providers and the Brighton Estate Residents Association.

Creating Communities have developed the Business Plan that underpins the facility development, management, community access and stakeholder engagement.

• The pilot program conducted through Clarkson Community High School has been exceptionally successful, with a number of students being offered employment and apprenticeships as a result of their training through the Shed Project;

• It is a high profile project that has engaged local youth and created strong connections between key stakeholders in the local community; and

• It is a model that provides opportunities to local people and has created interest in a number of other communities that wish to follow suit.
