Employment and Enterprise

Project

Establishing a plant nursery and community training facility in Kwinana.  The Ngulla Community Nursery provides training in horticulture and land management for local youth and the community.

Client

Peet Limited and Department of Housing and Works.

Challenge

The challenges were twofold. High youth unemployment in the Town of Kwinana required measures to positively engage young people, and Peet Limited identified a potential lack of native plants for the rehabilitation works for the Wellard wetland and estate.

Our Role

We played a lead role in conceptualising and initiating the project with Peet Limited, and led the creation of a partnership through developing a shared vision to design a community-based solution to address the local youth unemployment problem.

Founding partners included Bridging the Gap, Challenger TAFE, Medina Aboriginal Cultural Community, Town of Kwinana, Department of Housing and Works and Peet Limited. BHP Billiton is now also a partner in the project

With project partners, we were successful in securing a $239,000 grant from the Federal Government’s Enterprise Learning for the 21st Century Initiative.

We continue to have input into strategic planning and business management of the project.

Outcome

Ngulla Community Nursery operates as a successful enterprise whilst maintaining its youth and community development/training role. Up to 300 young people and community members have passed through the program/facility, to date. The Nursery now fulfills plant contracts to a range of clients across Western Australia.

In November 2008, the project was awarded the Australian and New Zealand Not-for-Profit Network Award for Partnership of the Year.
