Regional Strategic Planning

Project

Newman Tomorrow – Resourcing a Home for Generations

Client

The Shire of East Pilbara

Scope

The Shire of East Pilbara is the largest local government in the world. At 371,696 square kilometres it is bigger that Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory combined.
Creating Communities was engaged to conduct a major strategic planning exercise to identify clear strategies and projects for the Shire’s future and to produce a document to advocate for increased investment in infrastructure and services.
Creating Communities conducted research, consultation and strategic planning workshops to arrive at a vision and strategic planning framework with the community. The result was a blueprint for the development of Newman over two decades which had a focus on:

  • Securing improved social outcomes for the broad range of demographics;
  • Building pride in the town of Newman and the Shire;
  • Recognising Indigenous culture and establishing a foundation for greater Indigenous participation in the local economy;
  • Developing the town centre in Newman;
  • Balancing the strengths of the resource sector with the needs of small business and tourism.

Success

The strategy was adopted by the Shire and was particularly well received by Federal and State Government and has been instrumental in delivering increased investment in hard and soft infrastructure.
