Challenge

A key element of the community development planning for Harvest Lakes estate, Western Australia’s first Greensmart development, was the early provision of a sustainable community centre.

Outcome

The result is an innovatively designed community centre co-located adjacent to the primary school and oval that captures the distinctiveness of the Harvest Lakes project and accommodates the interests of all partners.

Success

  • The Harvest Lakes Community and Environmental Centre has become the focal point within a sustainable community precinct;

  • Shared-use facilities;

  • Interagency partnerships – Creating Communities established the Centre as a joint venture between LandCorp and the City of Cockburn;

  • The Centre was provided up front to provide a focal point for the community;

  • Not-for-profit agencies assisted with capital and ongoing management costs;

  • Creating Communities attracted $936,085 to the project;

  • The developer, Council and community meet regularly to have joint input into the Centre’s management, usage and marketing; and

  • The Centre has a high rate of usage by local residents and community groups.
