Community engagement and building social capital

Friends of The Anchorage Residents Group

Client

Australand

Opportunity

Creating Communities began working in partnership with Australand and residents of The Anchorage Estate in 2001. With only a small population, the opportunity existed to identify the real champions of the Estate who were passionate about living in The Anchorage and wanted to create a welcoming and safe community for everyone.

Strategy

The role of Creating Communities was to assist Australand in establishing the Friends of the Anchorage Residents Group, which focussed primarily on:

  • Consulting with residents to identify community leaders interested in taking a role in a residents' group;

  • Facilitating and supporting the group from inception through to becoming an incorporated body;

  • Partnership projects with community representatives;

  • Guiding the formation of a vision and objectives; and

  • Assisting the group to plan strategies to achieve the association’s goals.

Achievements

Creating Communities has worked in partnership with Australand and residents of The Anchorage for over five years to create a vibrant, self-reliant community with resources to continue to ensure The Anchorage is a great community to live. The Residents Group has achieved many things in this time including:

  • A regular community newsletter;

  • Movie Night in the Park;

  • Christmas street parties;

  • Set up a craft group;

  • Set up of a walking group; and

  • Friends of the Anchorage social evenings.
