Issue

A lack of public transport, accessible age-specific activities and financial freedom are issues faced by local teenagers (12-17 years) in Yanchep and Two Rocks, especially in the holiday period. An opportunity to engage with local youth and develop positive relationships with this cohort has been identified with the view to foster entrepreneurial and vocational skills in youth through a range of organised training programs during the school holidays.

Strategy

To understand the requirements of local youth, Creating Communities ran a consultation workshop with fourteen Year 10 students from the local district high school to identify the types of activities they would like to participate in. Consultation with Council officers, community leaders and the local school was also carried out to assess the scope of existing programs for youth and to identify gaps in service provision.

While our original intentions were to encourage participation in vocational activities, the students were mainly interested in recreational programs, including surfing, jewellery making and martial arts workshops.

With flexibility and trust integral to working with youth, we decided to provide a school holiday program incorporating activities suggested by the youth during the consultation; thus creating a firm foundation for future initiatives.

Outcomes

Our client’s first school holiday program was well patronised by youth and considered highly successful by the client. Local people with a variety of skills volunteered their time to run workshops, including jewellery making, screen printing, martial arts and origami. A "learn to surf" workshop was organised as a part of the program and was very well received. The local Recreation Association and Community Centre also volunteered their services, ensuring a bright future for the program.

Most importantly, local youth supported the program, with a few of the workshops fully booked. Following its success, our client is planning a number of holiday programs to run throughout each school holiday period, which we will evolve to include training and vocational-based elements.
