To understand the requirements of local youth, Creating Communities ran a consultation workshop with fourteen Year 10 students from the local district high school to identify the types of activities they would like to participate in. Consultation with Council officers, community leaders and the local school was also carried out to assess the scope of existing programs for youth and to identify gaps in service provision. While our original intentions were to encourage participation in vocational activities, the students were mainly interested in recreational programs, including surfing, jewellery making and martial arts workshops. With flexibility and trust integral to working with youth, we decided to provide a school holiday program incorporating activities suggested by the youth during the consultation; thus creating a firm foundation for future initiatives. |
